We maintain Period Piece as a privacy-conscious website service that tries to use the minimum amount of user data as possible to function. What information we do use, we describe in the following terms:

What we collect

• The contact form — By using the contact page, you are sending us a direct message passed through our website host on the way to our inbox. Without providing your return email (which is optional on the contact form), we do not have a way of replying to you. Messages are not shared outside of our email service, nor do we use any provided emails for any other purpose than replying to your original message.
• Disagreeing with a saltiness score — Every site review page possesses a button allowing users to submit their disagreement with our assessed "saltiness" score. Pressing said button records one thing: that the score was disagreed with. We store a one-way fingerprint of your IP address so the same visitor isn’t counted twice for the same score; it is never linked to anything else, and it is discarded after 90 days. This information is also recorded in your browser's Local Storage, allowing it to remember that you pressed the button when you return to the site. Accordingly, this information can also be cleared from your Local Storage, should you wish.
• Asking for a review — The review request button works exactly the same as the disagreement button, with its information also being cleared after 90 days. We keep tally internally of review request counts for the purpose of maintaining the site.
• The review suggestion box — When you write a message in the review suggestion box, we receive your message and the prefilled suggestion reason and nothing further. The information goes to a private editorial queue, it is never published or shown to other visitors, and it is deleted after 180 days whether or not we’ve acted on it. Because we can’t identify who sent a review suggestion using this form, we ask that if you'd like a reply to your message to please use the main site contact form.
• Server logs — Our hosting provider may keep standard access logs (such as your IP address, browser type, and time of request) for security and reliability purposes. These are held by the host (Cloudflare), not by us directly.
• Images and streaming availability — Posters, stills and the logos of streaming services load from The Movie Database (TMDB). Because your browser fetches those images directly, TMDB may receive your IP address during the process of serving them to you. Certain pages additionally draw content from Wikimedia Commons, which also requires your browser to fetch it. The “Where to watch” listings are JustWatch data supplied through TMDB and are requested by our server, not yours. We do not look up where you are: the country box defaults to your browser’s own language setting and is yours to change.
• Analytics — Opting in to allow analytics lets us collect anonymized data about what specific site features get interacted with (e.g. what threads get pulled, which search filters used) that lets us better tailor the site's experience. None of this data is used to personally identify individual users. Without analytics enabled, we can only receive basic information such as how many people have loaded a page on the site. 

Cookies and local storage

We keep a handful of items in your browser’s local storage for certain, aforementioned purposes: your cookie choice; one marker per each saltiness score you’ve disagreed with or review you requested, a marker for whether you have visited before, so the bookmark in the corner can be open for new visitors, the country you last chose in a review's "Where to watch" box, whether you asked for Period Piece’s own grouped genre categories in place of TMDB’s names, and the rules you last selected in Temporal Trivia along with your best result. We do not use any of these for personal tracking or analytics ends, solely for the utility functions here described. Any analytics or non-essential storage items stay off until you opt in. Who we share with

We don’t sell your data. The limited information we process is handled by the services that make the site work: our hosting provider, Cloudflare, (serving pages and logs), TMDB (posters/still images, and film information), Wikimedia Commons (historical images), and, if you contact us, our email provider, Google. Each processes data under its own policy.

Your choices

You are free to browse with “Essential only” selected, decline analytics, and ask us to delete any message you’ve sent us. To make a specific request, please use the contact page.
